Tribal Community Health Profiles Project
The Oklahoma City Area Inter-Tribal Health Board Tribal Epidemiology Center has developed Community Health Profiles (CHPs) for each of the 42 tribes in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. The CHPs were developed using public access, county-level data from Census, the Oklahoma State Department of Health’s vital statistics data and Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey data, and other pubic data sources. The CHPs include sections on demographics, available health indicators, maternal and child health information, as well as mortality statistics. The CHPs include basic health information, as well as tables and graphs that provide statistical information so that the profile will be useful for health care professionals as well as those without health backgrounds. Three copies of each CHP were printed and bound, and one copy of each CHP was mailed to each tribal leader offering the opportunity for comments, questions, or revisions. The TEC is currently using the completed profiles with public data to encourage tribes to complete data sharing agreements, which will allow the TEC to include tribal data in the community health profiles. The original profiles were created using county level data, and the additional tribal information will provide a better reference for the tribes to begin setting health priorities based on the needs of their specific community. The goal of the next phase of the CHPs is to begin working with each tribe to include tribal data and to individualize each profile to meet the tribes’ needs.
